Two things called me

Courtyard HIROO is pleased to present an exhibition by Christine Reifenberger and Martin Streit as part of the international exchange project Two Things Called Me.
This project brings together artists from Japan, Germany, and Switzerland. Conceived and organized by the artists themselves, it offers an opportunity to look back on the artistic practices of painters, sculptors, photographers, and musicians who have maintained individual connections since the 1990s, tracing their journeys alongside the transformations of their respective countries and societies.
Across six galleries in Tokyo, each artist will present a solo exhibition featuring major works in a range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and performance.
We warmly invite you to visit the exhibition when you are in the area.

Christine Reifenberger transforms the very process of matter changing from moment to moment into an artwork. Moving fluidly between painting, sculpture, and installation, she incorporates the autonomous behavior of materials—including flowing paint, gravity, and the movement of air—to create new forms at the intersection of surface and space, order and chance. Suspended in space, her vividly colored works continue to sway subtly in response to air currents and the movements of viewers, emerging not as fixed objects but as presences that evolve over time. In her practice, she moves back and forth between allowing things to unfold on their own and intervening with intention. Through this process, painting is transformed from a static image into a living material that continues to generate itself. The movement of color that refuses to come to rest—what we encounter here is a form of living painting that continually escapes the very notion of completion.

Martin Streit, meanwhile, explores the act of seeing itself in painting. Distancing himself from the mimetic understanding of painting as the faithful reproduction of subjects, he has investigated how color and light themselves shape perception. Moving between painting and photography, he places not the depiction of motifs but the ways in which we perceive the world at the center of his practice. Through subtle shifts in color and planar compositions, his works create a new experience of painting that extends beyond the objects depicted, evoking the sensation of light filling a space. His photographic practice, too, quietly reveals the processes through which time and light are transformed within our perception.

In this exhibition, the practices of these two artists, each grounded in a distinct methodology, resonate with one another. Reifenberger pursues painting as a form that resists completion and remains in a state of continual becoming, while Streit explores the boundary between what we see as light and what we experience through sensation. Their works open up a space where order and chance, perception and sensation intersect, inviting viewers away from fixed interpretations and into experiences of perception that are constantly shifting and evolving.

Martin Streit-

Martin Streit explores the very act of seeing in painting. Moving away from the mimetic understanding of painting as the faithful reproduction of objects, he has pursued an investigation into how color and light themselves shape our perception. Moving between painting and photography, Streit places not the depiction of motifs but the way we perceive the world at the center of his practice.
Through subtle shifts in color and flat compositions, his works create a new experience of painting that transcends the objects depicted, evoking a sense of light filling the space. His photographic practice, too, quietly reveals the process through which time and light transform within us.
Where lies the boundary between what we see as light and what we experience as light? Standing before Streit’s paintings, viewers may find that these two realms gradually merge into one.
