コートヤードHIROOでは、7月3日から7月25日までの期間中、戸田沙也加氏による「種子の漂着地」を開催いたしました。
From July 3 to July 25, Courtyard HIROO hosted the exhibition “Where Seeds Wash Ashore” by Sayaka Toda.
昨年のArtist Bookshelf 企画でも本棚を共有くださった戸田さんによる展示。写真と絵画、2つのメディアで表現を続ける戸田さんならではの、多層的な視座が交錯する空間となりました。
This exhibition is by Ms. Toda, who also shared her bookshelf as part of last year’s “Artist Bookshelf” project. It is a space where multiple, layered perspectives intersect—a hallmark of Ms. Toda, who continues to express herself through two media: photography and painting.
友人の結婚式を機に20年ぶりに訪れた沖縄で撮影した風景や事物の写真とその他で見つけたカンナの花を描いた絵画を並置する。「写真」は外部の世界に向けられた眼差しの断片であり、「絵画」は内部に蓄積された時間の推積であある。
二つのメディアを往環するなかで、映しとられた対象は単なる個人的な記録から象徴としての記憶へと変化し、その地に刻まれた歴史や他者の存在へと接続されていく。
風や海流によって運ばれた種子が遠く離れた土地で根を下ろすように、それぞれの出会いや記憶もまた、時代や場所を越えて漂着し、新たな物語を芽吹かせていく。
I juxtapose photographs of landscapes and objects taken in Okinawa—which I visited for the first time in 20 years to attend a friend’s wedding—with paintings of canna flowers I discovered there. “Photographs” are fragments of a gaze directed toward the external world, while “paintings” are accumulations of time stored within.
As I move back and forth between these two media, the subjects captured in the photographs transform from mere personal records into symbolic memories, connecting to the history etched into that land and the presence of others.
Just as seeds carried by the wind and ocean currents take root in distant lands, each encounter and memory also drifts across time and place, eventually washing ashore to sprout new stories.
１階には深海魚の写真作品を、対になるようにして２階にはカンナの花の絵画作品を展示しました。作品のサイズが大きいため迫力満点の作品でした。
On the first floor, we displayed photographs of deep-sea fish, and on the second floor, as a counterpart, we exhibited paintings of canna flowers. Because the works were so large, they made a truly impressive impact.

戸田沙也加
1988年埼玉生まれ 女子美術大学大学院美術専攻洋画研究領域修了
初期は絵画を中心に活動し、現在は写真・映像・インスタレーションなど複数のメディアを横断しながら、植物や女性の身体などをモチーフに「美と醜」や「記憶と忘却」などをテーマとして扱う。近年は家族や友人など身近な関係性において生じた問いやジェンダーについて扱った作品を制作。
Born in Saitama in 1988; completed graduate studies in Western Painting at Joshibi University of Art and Design.
Initially focusing on painting, she now works across multiple media, including photography, video, and installation, using motifs such as plants and the female body to explore themes such as “beauty and ugliness” and “memory and forgetting.” In recent years, she has created works addressing questions arising from close relationships with family and friends, as well as issues of gender.
