2022年、塩原有佳と花崎草はソノ アイダ#新有楽町でのレジデンスにて、「Flowers for urban maladies（都市に処方する花束）」展を開催しました。
塩原は、「万能薬」の象徴として芍薬と金襴草の花束のモチーフを反復させた大型絵画などを制作しました。
花束の反復は、女性や非西洋文化が「低俗」として軽視されてきた装飾的表現を、ファインアートの文脈に意図的に持ち込むことで、美術における価値基準そのものを問い直す「パターン＆デコレーション（P&D）」ムーブメントを引用したものです。
花崎は、かつて有楽町にも存在した花売りの姿をゴーストのように蘇らせるパフォーマンス《有花 -路上の花売り-》などを実施しました。
都市の発展とともに追いやられるように姿を消した人々や職業、そしてそこに宿っていた関係性や温度——花崎の作品はそういった失われたものの気配を、パンデミック禍において人々の間に生まれた緊張感や距離感とともに、現代の街角に浮かび上がらせました。
二人が選んだ「処方」という言葉には、利便性・効率・消費が加速する現代社会の中で、置き去りにされた価値や忘れられてきたものへの問いかけが込められています。
あれから4年。今回の「Flowers for urban maladies 2.0」では、場所を移し、時間を経てもなお、その問いは続いており、塩原有佳による新作の壁画などが展開されます。
排除されてきたものや失われた価値を再考し、都市の病に花束を差し出す行為は反復し、より鮮やかにその意味を刻みます。
“Flowers for urban maladies 2.0”
Yuka Shiobara and HANASAKI Kaya presented “Flowers for urban maladies” at Sono Aida #Shin-Yurakucho in 2022.
Shiobara created large-scale paintings repeating motifs of peonies and bugle weed — symbols of universal remedy. This repetition draws on the Pattern & Decoration (P&D) movement, which deliberately brought decorative expression — long dismissed as “lowbrow” and associated with women and non-Western cultures — into the context of fine art, questioning the very standards by which art is valued.
Hanasaki performed – Yu-Ka – The Flower Seller, conjuring the ghost of flower sellers who once roamed the streets of Yurakucho — figures erased as cities developed. The warmth and human connection that once existed in those encounters, the people and professions quietly displaced by urban progress — Hanasaki’s work surfaced these traces of what has been lost, alongside the tension and distance that had grown between people in the midst of the pandemic.
The word “prescription,” chosen by both artists, carries within it a quiet question: what values and ways of being have been left behind as society accelerates toward efficiency and consumption?
Four years on, “Flowers for urban maladies 2.0” continues. New wall paintings by Yuka Shiobara unfold in the space. The act of offering flowers to an ailing city repeats — and with each repetition, its meaning grows sharper.
