ピーターとの出会いは、2024年8月にコートヤードHIROOで開催されたRIVER ART GALLERY（台湾）による日本初企画展「Wallflower」でした。彼は日本滞在中、コートヤードHIROOを拠点に展覧会を行っただけでなく、作品制作や制作プロセスを見せるワークショップも開催してくれました。この1年間で、私たちは多くの時間を共に過ごし、今後もさらなるコラボレーションを企画しています。今回、改めて彼がなぜ作家を目指したのか、そして今後の展望についてインタビューを行いました。
Our first encounter with Peter was in August 2024 at “Wallflower,” the inaugural exhibition in Japan by RIVER ART GALLERY (Taiwan), held at Courtyard HIROO. During his stay in Japan, he was based at Courtyard HIROO, where he created new works and also held workshops to showcase his creative process. We’ve spent a significant amount of time together over the past year, and we’re currently planning further collaborations.
We recently had the opportunity to interview him again, delving into what inspired him to become an artist and what his future aspirations are.
Q：今日はよろしくお願いします。自己紹介となぜ作家を目指すようになったのか教えてください。What Inspired You to Become an Artist
こんにちは、僕の名前はピーターです。香港で生まれた画家で、現在はカナダのトロントを拠点に活動しています。幼い頃から、スポーツ、音楽、美術などさまざまなことに触れてきましたが、特に僕の心をつかんだのはビジュアルアート（視覚芸術）でした。映像をつくるという行為に魅了されていて、テレビの画面を一時停止しては、映し出された場面をスケッチするのが好きでした。その頃の好奇心は、周囲の世界を観察することへの深い情熱へと育っていきました。僕はいつも、日常の何気ない瞬間や、見過ごされがちな静かなディテールの中にある美しさに惹かれてきました。そうした注意深さは、今でも僕の制作活動の原動力になっています。さりげない、平凡な体験の中にある感覚を、作品として表現しようとしているのです。
Hi, my name is Peter, and I am a painter born in Hong Kong. Currently I am based in Toronto, Canada.From a young age, I was exposed to a variety of interests—sports, music, and visual arts—but it was visual art that captured me most. I was fascinated by the act of image-making, often pausing frames on the TV to sketch what I saw on screen. That early curiosity grew into a deeper passion for observing the world around me. I’ve always been drawn to the beauty in everyday moments and the quiet details that often go unnoticed. That sense of attentiveness continues to inspire my practice today, as I try to translate those subtle, mundane experiences into my work.
Q：制作するときのテーマを教えてください。Themes in Your Work
僕の作品は、迷信、運任せの遊び、そしてアジア社会における社会的メンタリティの形成といったテーマをよく扱っています。特に、香港に焦点を当てています。こうした文化的なダイナミクスが、日常的な儀式や心理的なパターンの中でどのように表れるのかに強く関心があります。僕の絵画に表れているいくつかのメンタリティは、1980〜90年代の香港映画に見られるムード、美学、そして社会の底流からインスピレーションを受けています。この時代の映画は、僕の視覚的・感情的な言語の形成に今も大きな影響を与え続けています。
My work often explores themes rooted in superstition, games of chance, and the formation of social mentality within Asian societies, with a particular focus on Hong Kong. I’m especially interested in how these cultural dynamics play out in everyday rituals and psychological patterns. Some of the mentalities represented in my paintings are also inspired by the mood, aesthetics, and social undercurrents I observe in Hong Kong cinema from the 1980s and 90s—a period that continues to shape my visual and emotional language.
Q：今後の展望 Future Vision
これから先、僕は自分の制作をさらに深め、挑戦し続けていきたいと考えています。特に、自分が強く関心を持っている現代の重要な課題と向き合うことに力を入れたいです。作品の表現の幅を広げる手段として、新しいメディアやコンセプトの探求にも興味があります。また、世界中の多様な観客とつながりを持ち、絵画と社会的テーマとの対話を続けていけることも楽しみにしています。僕たちの時代を形づくっている問題と、作品との関係を探る旅は、これからも続いていきます。
Looking ahead, I hope to continue pushing and challenging my practice to engage with critical contemporary issues that I care deeply about. I’m interested in exploring new media and concepts as a way to expand the language of my work. I also look forward to connecting with diverse audiences around the world, continuing the dialogue between painting and the societal themes that shape our time.
